Wild Flora | New cross-stitch pattern

Do you have a moment or thing that changed the game for you? For me it was an embroidered cardboard mask I made for a contest in 2011. Until then I'd been creating handmade wovens, screen-printed fabrics and yes, embroideries.

But it was with this cereal box cardboard that I perforated and cross-stitched that I saw all the possibilities of embroidery as a technique and career. I know, it was a simple piece of embroidery but it was its fun side and the non-traditional background I used that inspired me to see embroidery in a new way.

Since then I've not only devoted myself to embroidery as a maker, educator, and author, but I continue to hand-punch cereal boxes and cross-stitch through the holes as a way of honoring that moment (and yeah, having a good time).

My current cardboard project is this poppy-like flower which is part of my new “Wild Flora” pattern. This design is inspired by wild flowers and fruits and stitched on mono canvas (I stitched over two threads so as to get a larger motif).

This was the first time I used mono canvas and I loved the result! The blue fabric is especially calming and makes a beautiful background to the rest of the palette.

This pattern includes two distinct color charts for blue/dark and light backgrounds so it’ll look nice on any background color you choose.
